How schooling is organised

The United States has no national curriculum and no national school examination. Under the Tenth Amendment, education is a state function, and the federal Department of Education funds and regulates rather than prescribing what is taught. This is the single most important thing to understand when looking for American material: the state is the meaningful unit, and material aligned to one state's standards may not match another's.

Most states have adopted or adapted standards descended from the Common Core State Standards in mathematics and English language arts, and many use the Next Generation Science Standards for science. But adoption was uneven and several states wrote their own replacements, so the alignment is looser than the shared lineage suggests. Texas, for instance, never adopted Common Core and teaches the TEKS standards instead.

What the departments publish

State departments of education publish their standards documents, and a growing number publish full open educational resource (OER) collections built against them. The best of these — New York's EngageNY lineage, Louisiana's and Utah's OER libraries, Florida's CPALMS-linked material — are complete curricula with lesson plans, student materials and assessments, not just link lists.

At the federal level a handful of agencies produce genuinely excellent free material that is standards-agnostic and works in any state: NASA for space and earth science, the National Park Service and Library of Congress for primary source history, the U.S. Mint and Federal Reserve for economics, and the National Institutes of Health for health and biology. Because these are federal works, most are in the public domain.

Getting the most out of it

Find your state's standards document first and use its exact terminology when searching. A search for the specific standard code will often surface aligned material faster than a topic search.

If your state's collection is thin, borrow from a state with similar standards rather than from a generic worksheet site — the sequencing will be closer. And for AP or SAT preparation, note that these are administered by the College Board rather than any government body, so official free practice material comes from the College Board directly.
