What the Pomodoro technique actually is
The technique was developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s and named after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer he used as a student. The method is deliberately simple: choose one task, work on it without interruption for 25 minutes, take a 5-minute break, and after four such intervals take a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes.
The interval — one "pomodoro" — is the unit, and it is indivisible. If you break off halfway through to check a message, that pomodoro does not count. This sounds pedantic and is the whole mechanism: it makes the cost of an interruption visible rather than invisible.
Why a timer helps more than willpower
Most people assume the benefit is sustained concentration. In practice the technique works through three quieter effects:
It lowers the cost of starting. Procrastination is usually about initiation, not effort. "Revise organic chemistry" is unbounded and therefore easy to postpone; "work on organic chemistry for 25 minutes" is a commitment small enough to accept. Once you are twenty minutes in, continuing is rarely the problem.
It moves the decision to stop outside your head. Left to judgement, people take breaks when they notice fatigue — which is well after the point at which work quality began falling. A timer schedules the break before the decline instead of after it.
It gives you an honest measure of work. "I studied for four hours" says nothing about how much of that was studying. "I completed six pomodoros" is countable, and the count tends to be humbling in a useful way. This timer tracks completed sessions and total focus time for exactly that reason.
Choosing your interval
The 25/5 pattern is a starting point, not a rule, and the classic mistake is treating it as one. Match the interval to the shape of the task:

The settings above let you change the focus length, both break lengths, and how many sessions precede a long break, so you can fit the timer to the task rather than the other way round.
The one rule worth keeping
Whatever interval you choose, take the break away from the work. A break spent scrolling on the same screen you were working on is not a break in any useful sense — it is a different cognitive load in the same posture. Stand up, look at something more than a few metres away, get water. Five minutes of that restores considerably more than five minutes of a feed.
Using it for exam revision
The technique combines well with what research on memory actually supports. Two specific pairings:
Interleave within a session. Rather than devoting a whole pomodoro to one topic, mix problem types inside it. Practising twenty of the same question type in a row feels efficient and trains the wrong skill, because you never have to work out which method a question calls for. Mixing forces that discrimination, which is usually most of the difficulty in an exam.
Space repeats across days. Four separate one-pomodoro sessions on a topic across four days will beat four consecutive pomodoros today, at identical total cost. The forgetting between sessions is what makes the return trip effective.

Handling interruptions
Cirillo's own advice on this is the most practical part of the method. When something surfaces mid-interval — a thought about another task, a message, a thing you forgot — write it on a list and return to work. Deal with the list during the break.
The reasoning is that most interruptions are not urgent; they simply feel urgent because they arrived. Capturing them satisfies the impulse to act without paying the cost of switching, which for demanding work is measured in minutes rather than seconds.
Common questions
Does the timer keep running if I switch tabs?
Yes. The timer is driven by clock time rather than by a counter that pauses, so switching tabs or minimising the window does not stop it. That said, browsers throttle background tabs, so notification timing can be slightly delayed if the tab has been in the background for a long period.
Are my session statistics saved?
Session counts are kept in your browser's local storage so they survive a reload. They are stored on your own device and are never transmitted to us. Clearing your browser data clears them, and they are not shared between devices or browsers.
What if I finish the task before the timer ends?
Use the remaining time on the same subject rather than stopping early — review what you just did, or start the next problem. Cirillo's version treats over-learning as the correct use of leftover time, and it preserves the interval as a reliable unit of measurement.
Is 25 minutes backed by research?
The specific number is not. It is a practical choice that has worked well for a lot of people, not a finding about attention span. What does have support is that distributed practice beats massed practice and that scheduled breaks preserve performance better than working to exhaustion. Choose the interval that suits your task.
Can I use it for group study?
It works well, provided everyone agrees the intervals are silent. The common failure is a group that treats the focus period as loosely collaborative, at which point nobody gets an uninterrupted 25 minutes. Work silently, discuss during breaks.
