How schooling is organised

Chile's Ministry of Education sets the national curriculum (bases curriculares) across eight years of educación básica and four of educación media, the last two of which allow differentiated scientific-humanist or technical-professional paths. Schools operate under municipal, subsidised-private and private-paid arrangements, all working from the same curriculum.

University admission runs through the Prueba de Acceso a la Educación Superior (PAES), which replaced the older PSU and is administered nationally. The Agencia de Calidad de la Educación additionally runs the SIMCE standardised assessments to monitor system performance.

What the ministry publishes

MINEDUC's platforms are a genuine strength. Curriculum Nacional publishes the curricular bases, programmes of study and classroom material by level and subject. Aprendo en Línea was built as a student-facing companion with sequenced activities, and the Biblioteca Digital Escolar provides free licensed e-books to school students. Textbooks distributed to schools are also published as free PDFs.

DEMRE, the body that runs the PAES, publishes past papers and model questions. Everything is in Spanish, with Ministry statistics and some policy documents also in English.

Getting the most out of it

The free official textbook PDFs are the most underused resource here — they are the same books used in classrooms, aligned to the curricular bases, and downloadable without registration.

For PAES preparation, DEMRE's published models matter more than general subject revision because the test format is specific and has changed since the PSU era.
