Why these tools work differently

Every tool on this page runs entirely in your browser. There is no account to create, no upload step, and no server-side processing. The text you paste into the word counter, the grades you enter into the GPA calculator, the decks you build in the flashcard tool — none of it is transmitted to us, because there is nothing on our side to transmit it to. OffLearn is a set of static files.

That is a deliberate design decision rather than a limitation we are making the best of. Study tools handle material students often would rather not hand over: unpublished coursework, draft essays, actual grades. The safest way to protect that is not to collect it, so we don't.

Two practical consequences follow. First, the tools keep working if your connection drops — once a page has loaded, nothing needs the network. Second, anything a tool remembers between visits is stored in your own browser's local storage, which means it stays on that device and in that browser. Your flashcard decks will not appear on your phone, and clearing your browser data deletes them. Use the export option in the flashcard tool if you want to move a deck or keep a backup.

Each tool page includes a longer explanation of what it calculates and where the conventions come from — how net WPM differs from gross, why percentage change is not symmetric, why a British 70% must not be run through an American GPA table. Those explanations are usually more useful than the calculator itself, because the errors that cost marks are almost always conceptual rather than arithmetic.

What these tools are not

They are utilities, not a curriculum. They will not teach you a subject, and no calculator substitutes for the official material that defines what you are assessed on. For that, start with the body that sets your curriculum and the body that runs your examinations — our resource directory lists 734 free resources from those bodies across 50 jurisdictions in 18 countries, and the exam schedule pages link to every official timetable we have been able to confirm.

A specific caution on the GPA and citation tools: both produce output that looks authoritative and is only as good as what you put in. Institutions use their own GPA formulas, and style manuals are revised and published in institution-specific variants — particularly Harvard. Where your registrar's policy or your department's style guide differs from a tool's output, follow your institution. The tool does not know your regulations.
