Oceania: national exam dates and examination bodies

Oceania runs a southern-hemisphere calendar, so final examinations fall in October and November rather than in mid-year.

How examinations are organised across the region

The most important thing about Oceania's exam calendar is that it runs on a southern-hemisphere academic year. The school year starts in late January or February and ends in December, which puts final examinations in October and November — the point in the year when northern hemisphere students are starting a new course.

Australia has no national examination. Each state and territory runs its own senior certificate through its own authority: the HSC in New South Wales (NESA), the VCE in Victoria (VCAA), the QCE in Queensland (QCAA), and equivalents in the other five jurisdictions. Results feed into the ATAR, a nationally comparable ranking used for university admission. New Zealand runs NCEA nationally through NZQA, with external examinations in November.

Across the Pacific island states, several countries use the South Pacific Form Seven Certificate and related regional qualifications administered through the Educational Quality and Assessment Programme, alongside national examinations.

Exam periods, not single dates

Australian senior examinations run as multi-week periods rather than single days. The HSC written examination period typically spans from mid-October into early November, with individual subjects on their own days. This means a published start and end date tells you the window but not your personal timetable, which depends on your subject combination and comes from your state authority.

Many Australian senior subjects also carry substantial school-based assessment completed well before the written examinations, and in Queensland's QCE system internal assessment is a formally weighted component. The written exam dates are only part of the picture.

Using these dates

Go to your state or territory authority for your personalised timetable — NESA, VCAA, QCAA, SACE, SCSA, TASC or their counterparts. For New Zealand, NZQA publishes the national NCEA examination timetable.

All of these bodies publish past papers, and the Australian authorities also publish marking guidelines and examiners' reports that explain where candidates commonly lost marks. Those reports are the most useful and least used free revision resource in the region.

Confirmed examination dates

The dates below are the ones we have been able to confirm against the examination body's own published timetable. Always check the official link before relying on a date — timetables are revised, and individual subject papers within an exam period vary by candidate.

Examination bodies without published dates

For these 13 countries we have verified the responsible examination authority and its official website, but have not yet confirmed a 2025–2026 timetable — either because it has not been released, or because it is not published in a form we can cite. We list the authority rather than guessing at dates.
